Day 19 (15 July): Brighter Day

I got twin egg york again! This "phenomenon" really woke me up mentally.

Having been physically waken up by sunlight at 7 a.m. although the clock was supposed to ring at 9 a.m., I met Clair briefly when she was about to head off for her trip and then I went to shower which didn't mentally affect my awakening. With my sleeping mind but empty stomach, I thought of having fried egg and bacon as breakfast. The moment the egg hit the pan brought me to full consciousness. This is the second Double-york egg from a package of 6 and I still have 3 eggs left... Let's see if I will get another twin-york egg...

The sky became clearer and brighter although the clouds were thick and rain drops still remained on the windows. The mountain to the west never been visible before could be seen from the dining room's windows today. The sky and light here seem rather mysterious, while revealing some elements in the ocean, they hide some others at different times...

After breakfast, I worked on this blog. Today updating seemed less demanding. Perhaps I got used to with it or I didn't have so many photos to add. Having finished blogging, I continued the tree a bit before 11 a.m., quite early than usual.

Around noon, the sun shone stronger, touching the roots in progress....

Having worked until 2 p.m., I left the residence for the city when it was sunny and rather warm. I had 3 missions to accomplish in town: buying the bus pass, finding a box and fetching towels from SIM office. Then, I thought that I would have time to visit the National Museum if I take the other route than my normal one to town.

On Hringbraut, there is the statue of Hednin Valdimasson and his mobile (please don't take it seriously)...

On approaching the National Museum which is situated on Hringbraut, I found that the architecture of the museum looked quite ordinary (in the other word, boring). However, the new part which functioned as the museum cafe looked quite nice.

I changed my mind when I entered the museum. The interior completely differed from the building seen from outside.

This staircase was my favorite part...

The National Museum of Iceland had a permanent exhibition titled Making the Nation - Heritage and History in Iceland. The exhibition presented the history of Icelandic nation from the Settlement Age to present. The displays were well done; all details had been considered. Even lamps giving light to each display were hidden so that they didn't disturb the objects displayed. The admission fee to the permanent exhibition was only 300 ISK (student rate).

The were also three other temporary exhibition. The first one was the exhibition showing Icelandic items from Sweden. I liked very the concept of the exhibition design generated from the fact that items were transported by sea. The concept was presented in form of see-through containers. My favorite part was the displays of smalls items in large boxes. Each box had layers of transparent shelves, each of which being placed objects. All items could be viewed at once. What a brilliant idea! The second exhibition presented the lives of 5 people of different professions: painter, craftsman, teacher, farmer and bakery owner, by bringing the personal belongings and stories of each person to a display. The third exhibition showed contemporary photographic art. As it was almost 4.30 p.m., I decided that I would come back another time to visit this exhibition; otherwise, I was sure that I couldn't make it to SIM office before 5 p.m.

The entrance/exit of the museum was simple yet interesting.

By the way, I forgot to mention that I met Yemima in front of the museum. It seemed that I had met her almost everyday...

The route to SIM office passed Tjönin. I noticed a different kind of ducks from the kinds I had seen. When I came close to the pond, many ducks swam towards me. I guessed that they expected I would feed them. Sorry I didn't have anything for ducks in my bag. After they realized that I wasn't going to feed them, they swam away.... Smart ducks...

On passing by the other side of the City Hall. The architecture of it on this side looked quite impressive; it didn't seem as awful as I had said earlier about the waterfront side.

I arrived at SIM office before 5 p.m. Surprisingly, I met Yemima again there. It seemed that our paths merged quite often today. Kristin said that we could have a presentation on 29 July from 5-8 p.m. This meant that I need to arrange my trip with TT, so that I can come back to Reykjavik in time, perhaps around 4 p.m. A hour for setting up the work should be enough.

On leaving SIM office, Yemima and I walked to the opposite direction, meaning our ways shouldn't converge again today. Then, I continued to the post office on Austurstraeti to send 2 postcards and to ask if they had a large box that I could pack the tree back to Helsinki as Kristin suggested. However, the post didn't have any large box and the man there told me to check at Emysson, the bookstore on the opposite side of the street. The bookshop didn't sell any cardboard box. However, the woman whom I asked was really kind; she found a large box in the storage of the bookstore for me. So, I got a box I was looking for free of charge.

Then, I went to buy the Snarfellness bus pass (12600 ISK) for the trip tomorrow at the Tourist Informataion. From my calculation, a bus pass should be cheaper than separate bus tickets. I hope my calculation was correct...

Walking back to the residence with the huge box was quite demanding when the wind was pretty strong. Anyway, I and the box safely arrived at the residence. After dropping the box, I went to Byke to buy packaging materials (tape and bubble plastic). However, this shop had only the packing tape. Well, I can check at a stationery store some other day. Then, I went to Kronan to do grocery shopping.

Returning to the residency at 6.30 p.m, I immediately cooked Tom Yum noodle soup with fish balls and bean sprouts. The fish balls didn't taste as I expected, because it was filled with mayonnaise. Eating them together with Tom Yum flavor gave a truly odd experience... After this "fusion" meal, I updated this blog. So, now the blog is sort of up-to-date...
