Day 18 (14 July): Travel Planning Day

I woke up around 8 a.m, took shower and prepared breakfast. I tried to make Okonomiyaki which turned to look (and taste) similar to omelet. What a disappointment! It was just because I used olive oil which didn't suit frying pancakes. Everything sticked on the pan! During breakfast, I chatted with Clair who surprisingly got up early although she didn't have any trip today. Clair told me about the glacier walk tour and that she would go to the north tomorrow. After breakfast, I showed her my tree and Clair showed the catalog of her exhibition which just ended in June. Her oil paintings created from her family photographs being transfered to part of canvas looked gorgeous. Very interesting technique. Then, I talked briefly with Fergal and his wife when they were going for a swim.

Today, my routine didn't continue with blog updating but planning the next trip. After checking the weather forecast for the coming few days, I decided to go to the west in stead of the north just, because the north will have only rain and clouds until Saturday. So, my destination is Snaefellness peninsula. I planned to leave on Wednesday and return on Friday... Then, I started to search for accommodation in the area where the bus route passes. There seemed to be 3 possibilities: either in Hellissandur, Olafsvik or Grundafjördur. In each of these towns, there were a limited number of accommodations that could be easily reached without a car. In Hellissandur, there was only an expensive hotel (Hotel Edda). Although I found a guesthouse named Gimli, when I rang there I discovered that its business had ended for several years. While there were a hotel (Hotel Olafsvik) and two guesthouses (H-Hus Guesthouse and Guesthouse Olafsvik) in Olafsvif, in Grundafjördur, there were only one hotel (Hotel Grundafjördurand) and one hostel (Grundafjördur Hostel). I emailed the guesthouses in Olafsvif and the hostel in Grundafjördur. After waiting for answers from these places for a few hours, I decided to phone them. The numbers of both guesthouses in Olafsvik seemed no longer in use.

Then, I thought that I should calm down and wait. So, I worked on this blog, trying to making everything up-to-date. For lunch around 2.30 p.m., I had again pasta with pesto, the second poor meal of the week... When preparing this poor meal, Julia was surfing the internet at the dining table with maps and a guidebook around. She said she was looking for a reasonable rental car and the cheapest tariff she found was offered by a web-based booking service in the US. I wondered if this is reliable. I tend to be skeptic about this sort of things. After lunch, I rang again the guesthouses but the result remained the same. I also called the hostel. The man who answered the call said that there seemed to be available places in the dorm room but as he wasn't at the computer, he was 100% sure and I could call him again in half an hour. Then, I said I had earlier in the morning emailed the hostel. So, he said he respond via an email later when he could reach a computer.

Just like yesterday and the day before, today was a rainy day...

At 3.30 p.m., I began to work with the tree, continuing the third set of roots. Soon after the start of today tree making, I received the confirmation from the Hostel in Grundafjördur. I did get the last available bed in the hostel, lucky me... During the afternoon hours, I was sometimes distracted by the coming trip planning. So, I now had the first day plan that I would, instead of dropping at Grundafjördur at the hostel, continue to Hellissandur to get some information about the Snaefellness National Park while waiting for another bus that will take me around the national park. The second and the third days were still open. I have 3 options in mind: a (short) hike in the national park, a whale watching in Olafsvik or a visit to Flatey and Stykkisholmur.

Regardless of this distraction, I could work quite well. I finished the third group of the tree's roots around midnight...

Then, I made the start of the fort set of roots.... I thought that this set should be quite complex with a lot of rootlets similar to the other set on the opposite side of the trunk in order to balance the overall root part.

I worked until 1.15 a.m. The forth set of roots were growing slowly but steadily...

It was a quite long day... I hope to finish this set of roots before the Wednesday trip although I doesn't seem likely...
